The Emu (Dromaius novaehollandiae (Latham, 1790)) is a large bird belonging to the Casuariidae family, and represents the second tallest living bird in the world after its ratite relative, the Ostrich. It is endemic to Australia, where it is the largest native bird and the only extant member of the genus Dromaius. The emu's range includes much of mainland Australia, while the insular subspecies that inhabited the islands of Tasmania, Kangaroo Island and King Island became extinct following the settlement of European settlers on the islands in 1788.
Emus can reach up to 1.9 meters in height. Like all ratites, emus are incapable of flying, but they are excellent runners, and a running emu can reach speeds of up to 48 km/h; they feed on a wide variety of plants and insects, and can go weeks without eating. They rarely drink, getting most of their water from food.
Females fight among themselves to mate with a male. Females can mate multiple times and lay several clutches in a single season. As with most ratites, the male hatches the eggs and the young are fed by the fathers. The chicks grow quickly and reach their adult size within six months, but may remain with their father.
the genus name Dromaius comes from a Greek word meaning "runner", while the species name, novaehollandiae, is the Latin term for New Holland, so the name can be translated as "swift foot of New Holland".
