Armadillidium maculatum is a Terrestrial Crustacean Woodlouse of the order Isopoda, named for its black and white patterns. It is native to southern France.
Armadillidium maculatum is medium in size for its genus and can grow up to 1.8 centimeters. Like other members of its family, it can curl up or roll into a ball if disturbed or to conserve moisture.
Its striped appearance is believed to be an example of Batesian mimicry, mimicking the pill centipede Glomeris marginata which secretes harmful chemicals. However, it has nothing in common with these animals, belonging to another subphilum. Armadillidium maculatum, like all other oniscids, has 7 pairs of legs and 7 main body segments.
The female stores fertilized eggs in an egg pouch on her lower body called a pouch.
It is a tubivore that feeds on decomposing organic material. It feeds mainly on fallen leaves and decaying wood. Like other members of its genus, it also appreciates fresh plant matter, lichens, tree bark and algae. Like all other isopods, it breathes through modified gill-like organs and requires some moisture to breathe, although it will drown if submerged in liquid for long periods of time.
