Coelopleurus maillardi Red Purple Sea Urchin cm 3 Sea Hedgehog Echinoderma Echinozoa Echinoidea Regularia Arbaciidae, unuique piece, as in photos.
Dive collected in September 2020 at 20-30 meters deep. Family: Arbaciidae.
Common name:
Deep Water Philippine Sea Urchin or Purple Sea Urchin.
Syn. Keraiophorus maillardi, Salmacis elegans.


Coelopleurus is an extant genus of deep-sea benthic echinoids from tropical regions, with fossil records dating back to the Eocene, found in Europe and North America.
These deep-sea sea urchins are characterized by long, delicate spines and strikingly vibrant colors, usually red, orange, and purple, which are evident in their exoskeletons even after desiccation and sometimes even after fossilization.
