The term dendrite is usually used to classify ramified structures. The origin of the term can be traced back to the Greek word "dendròn" (δενδρον) ie tree. These structures are very common in minerals and are formed spontaneously during the growth of crystals in "non-equilibrium" conditions: for example starting from supersaturated solutions or for rapid cooling of molten material. Many non-metallic substances (such as water) also spontaneously form these structures if they are subjected to rapid freezing. Structures of this kind are also the classic examples of pseudofossils, that is an inorganic object, a sign or a trace that can be interpreted as a fossil, although in reality it is only crystalline formations or other completely natural phenomena, not generated. from any fossilization process.
