Pecten (O. F. Müller, 1776) is a genus of marine Bivalve Molluscs of the Pectinidae family, also known as sea Scallops or saltwater Clams.
The fossil history of scallops is rich in species and specimens. The first known evidence is found in the Triassic period, over 200 million years ago. The oldest species were divided into two groups, one with an almost smooth outer shell, while the other had radial ribs. The fossil record also indicates that the abundance of species within the Pectinidae has varied greatly over time; Pectinids were the most diverse family of bivalves of the Mesozoic era, but the group almost disappeared completely by the end of the Cretaceous period. The survivors speciated rapidly during the Tertiary period. Nearly 7,000 species and subspecies names have been introduced for both fossil and recent scallops.
