Veneridae or Venerids (common name: Venus Clams), are a very large family of saltwater clams, from small to large in size, marine bivalve molluscs.
Shell sculpture tends to be primarily concentric with shapes adapted to their environments, such as circular, triangular, rectangular, or discoidal. On some there are radial and splayed ornaments and rarely thorns. They typically possess solid round or oval shells with the umbo facing the anterior end, a porcelain-like inner shell layer, a complex tooth structure in the hinge, well-developed stemma and lunula, and a well-developed pallial sinus. On each valve there are three or four cardinal teeth.
They are known from the Cretaceous to recent periods (age range: 136.4 Mya to today). Fossil shells have been found all over the world. About 20 extinct species are known.
