The Azure-Winged Magpie (Cyanopica cyanus, Pallas, 1776), is a passerine bird of the corvid family.
The scientific name of the species, cyanus, derives from the Greek word cyan in reference to the livery of these birds.
Measures 33-38cm in length. They are medium-sized birds with a strong, pointed conical beak and a tail about as long as their body.
The plumage is white and whitish-grey, while the wings, with the exception of the flight feathers, are deep blue. The tail is of the same color, but has a white tip and a blackish-grey lower surface. On the head there is a characteristic black hood that covers the forehead, vertex, nape and cheeks.
The beak and legs are blackish, while the eyes are dark brown.
These are diurnal birds that live in flocks of up to seventy individuals: during the day they disperse in search of food; towards sunset, the various groups converge on common perches among the branches of the trees, where they spend the night sheltered from the weather and from possible predators.
The blue magpie is a rather vocal bird, whose repertoire of calls is quite varied. It is an omnivorous bird and has shown that it can successfully adapt to anthropization, drawing advantages: in urban areas, in fact, these birds rummage through the garbage without problems, looking for food scraps left by man.
These are monogamous birds, widespread mostly in the Far East (Mongolia, Manchuria, Korea, China, up to the Japanese island of Honshū.
