Volcanic ash consists of small tephra, which are bits of pulverized rock and glass created by volcanic eruptions, less than 2 millimetres (0.1 inch) in diameter . Ash is created when the usually violent nature of an eruption involving steam results in the magma and solid rock surrounding the vent being torn into particles of clay to sand size.
Every ash samples is labelled and bagged in a vial with cap (mm 44 x 10), so thay can easily be removed if required for study under a microscope.
As with all volcanic ash, the material should be handled with care and not inhaled.


Haleakalā ("House of the Sun") is the main volcano on the island of Maui, in the Hawaiian archipelago.

The western 25% of the island is made up of another volcano, Mauna Kahalawai, also called the "West Maui Mountains."
Haleakalā's summit is 3,055 m (10,000 ft). From the summit, a deep depression can be seen, approximately 11.25 km (7 mi) wide, 3.2 km (2 mi) deep, and almost 800 m (2,600 ft) deep. The surrounding walls are steep, and the interior is mostly barren with a handful of volcanic cones.
In Hawaiian folklore, Haleakalā's depression (crater) was the home of the grandmother of the demigod Māui. According to legend, Maui's grandmother helped him capture the sun and force it to slow its journey across the sky to lengthen the day.
Haleakala has produced numerous eruptions over the past 30,000 years, including the last 500 years. This volcanic activity occurred along two rift zones, which continue under the ocean beyond Maui's east coast, making the rift zone one of the longest in the Hawaiian Island chain.
vulcano_Haleakala1.jpgUntil recently, it was thought that East Maui volcano first erupted around 1790, based largely on map comparisons made during the voyages of La Perouse and George Vancouver. Recent advanced dating tests, however, have shown that the last eruption more likely occurred in the 17th century.
Contrary to popular belief, Haleakalā's "crater" is not volcanic in origin, nor can it accurately be called a caldera (formed when the summit of a volcano collapses to form a depression). Scientists believe Haleakalā's "crater" formed when the rock walls of two large erosional valleys merged at the volcano's summit.
Haleakala has erupted three times in the last 900 years. By comparison, both Mauna Loa and Kilauea have erupted more than a dozen times each in the last 90 years. Therefore, its danger is rightly considered quite high.
