Rare specimen of Volcanic Sand erupted from the Eyjafjöll Volcan during the eruption in the April 2010's. Fine grained.

Volcanic ash consists of small tephra, which are bits of pulverized rock and glass created by volcanic eruptions, less than 2 millimetres (0.1 inch) in diameter . Ash is created when the usually violent nature of an eruption involving steam results in the magma and solid rock surrounding the vent being torn into particles of clay to sand size.
Every ash samples is labelled and bagged in a vial with cap (mm 44 x 10), so thay can easily be removed if required for study under a microscope.
As with all volcanic ash, the material should be handled with care and not inhaled.


Eyjafjöll is an Icelandic volcano, more precisely a small mountain range, covered by the Eyjafjallajökull glacier which, with an area of ​​78 km², is the fifth largest in Icelandic glaciers. By metonymy, the latter is often identified with the volcano. The chain is located in the south of Iceland, a few kilometers from the Atlantic ocean coast and west of the Mýrdalsjökull glacier.
It is an eroded stratovolcano, built from basaltic and andesitic lavas. Elongated in an east-west direction, it is surmounted by a caldera of 2.5 km in diameter. Much of the volcano is perpetually covered by a thick blanket of ice. Active from the Ice Age, only four eruptions of this volcano are known in historical times, the last one began March 20, 2010.
Eyjafjöll in Icelandic means "mountains of the islands". The word is composed of fjöll, plural noun of fjall ("mountain") and eyja, genitive plural of ey ("island"); the islands in question are the Vestmanns, located to the southwest and clearly visible from the volcano.
Geological studies have indicated that the volcano is active from the ice age, but the first eruption known in historical times dates back to 550 AD.The second was produced in 1612, with the emission of one million cubic meters of tephra and a volcanic explosivity index of 24. The third started on December 19, 1821 and ended on January 1, 1823. It caused the emission of 4 million cubic meters of tephra, with a high fluoride content. The melting of the ice gave rise to a strong flood (jökulhlaup), which caused considerable damage in the surrounding area. The fourth eruption, which caused the evacuation of about 600 people, began after 187 years, on the night of March 20, 2010 and was declared terminated in October 2010. On April 15, the presence of a volcanic ash cloud emitted from volcano in the atmosphere in a very large area has led to the closure of airspace and several airports in some countries of central and northern Europe: the United Kingdom, Ireland, Denmark, Norway, Belgium, France, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary, Romania, Spain and Italy. The situation was repeated to a lesser extent on May 9th.
