The origin of the MoonHistorically, several hypotheses have been proposed to explain the formation of the Moon that dates back to 4.5 billion years ago, roughly 50 million years after the formation of the solar system, such as the theory of fission, the capture theory and the growth theory, but none of these theories could explain the high angular momentum of the Earth-Moon system. Currently, the giant impact theory is the most accepted by the scientific community. It suggests the impact of a body the size of Mars (called Theia or Orpheus) with the Earth.
