Cypraea maculifera hawaiiensis mm 65 XL Extra quality Seashell Gastropoda Sea Snail Cowry. New subspecie,  only a piece, as in photos.
Collected at 20-30 feet deep bottom a platform at night.
Common name:  The Blotched Cowry or Reticulated Cowry.
Syn. Mauritia maculifera, Cypraea reticulata, Cypraea maculata.

Cypraea maculifera is a species of sea snail, cowrie, marine gastropod mollusk of the family Cypraeidae, cowries.
Four subspecies have been recognized:
Mauritia maculifera andreae, Mauritia maculifera maculifera, Mauritia maculifera martybealsi, Mauritia maculifera scindata.
Mauritia maculifera hawaiiensis is synonymous with Mauritia maculifera maculifera.
The shells of these cowries reach an average of 44 mm in length, with a minimum size of 30 mm and a maximum size of 89 mm. The back surface of these smooth, shiny shells is generally dark brown, with distinct large bluish spots. At the edges there are large brown spots. The base is white or light brown or pale pink. The opening is long and narrow, with numerous dark brown teeth. This species is distinguished by a characteristic brown columellar spot. In the animal the coat is transparent, with blue sensory papillae and can cover the entire shell.
This species is found in the Indian Ocean along Chagos and the Seychelles and in the Pacific Ocean (from Southeast Asia, the Philippines, Fiji and Micronesia through western Polynesia and Hawaii).
Specimens live in shallow tropical, subtidal and low-tide waters, usually under rocks or coral reefs at a minimum depth of about 4m. Because they fear the light, they begin to feed at sunset mainly on coral sponges or polyps.
