The Carcharodon carcharias (Linnaeus, 1758), also known as the great white shark, or sometimes simply Charcarodon shark, is a cartilaginous fish (Condrohycthyes) of the Lamnidae family. Only living representative of the genus Carcharodon, this shark is the largest predatory fish on the planet exists. Star of many films and documentaries, is the best known species of shark and studied in the world.
Linnaeus was to give the white shark the first scientific name, Squalus carcharias, in 1758. Sir Andrew Smith gave the generic Carcharodon in 1833. In 1873 the generic name has been merged with that scientific data by Linnaeus, making it the current one Carcharodon carcharias. Carcharodon comes from the ancient greek word καρχαρόδων karcharódōn (compound κάρχαρος kárcharos, which means "sharp" with that of ὀδούς, ὀδόντος, odous, odontos, that "tooth" means). Since καρχαρίας, karcharías, means "shark", the final meaning is "shark with sharp teeth."
The great white shark seems to have appeared on the planet during the Miocene: the best known ancient fossil has been dated as dating back to 16 million years ago. According to some biologists the white shark may be descended from a giant prehistoric shark, Carcharodon megalodon, because the similarity of the teeth and very large have led many scholars to believe that they were closely related by evolutionary point of view. The megalodon was therefore placed in the genus Carcharodon, or in the same genre which also includes the white shark. However, some biologists believe that despite the unquestioned membership of both the order Lamniforma, the white shark is actually more related to the progenitor of the Mako, Isurus the hastalis, and assigns the Megalodon gender Carcharocles.
There are also other theories, so that the debate between evolutionary biologists is still ongoing.
Essentially cosmopolitan, it has spread especially in cold or temperate waters between 11 to 24 ° C on the coast or offshore. This is particularly off the southern coast of Australia, South Africa, California and Mexico. However, it is also possible to find it in warmer waters, such as the Caribbean or more temperate, as in the Mediterranean Sea, in the area that includes Sicily, Malta and Tunisia. A 2010 study conducted on the genetic heritage has suggested that white sharks in the Mediterranean have arrived from Australia 450,000 years ago through the Strait of Gibraltar due to an error in following the marine currents and they are no longer able to get out of it, only to becoming genetically isolated.
It is a pelagic shark, but is close to the coast in areas particularly rich in potential prey (such as, for example, colonies of sea lions, seals, and penguins). It tends to stay at depths ranging from the surface to 250 meters, although it may very well go down to 1,200 meters.
It is a massive species, albeit of varying size. It has five gill slits, which can pump water only if the shark is moving. Thanks to its dual color (white in the lower body, and brown in the back) the visibility of the white shark is reduced, because it presents dark when viewed from above and clear when viewed against the light.
The white shark skin (and other sharks) has no scales, but dermal denticles pointed useful to let the water flow along the body of the shark and protect it from pests.
It owns what, for the popular belief, was considered the most powerful jaw among living animals, actually the bite of the crocodile is infinitely more powerful. That's because the shark has evolved to hunt prey such as seals, dolphins and fish, soft-bodied creatures and not armored, unlike terrestrial predators such as tigers or bears that have evolved to hunt large herbivores by the imposing bulk and massive and robust constitution. It should also be noted that the white shark, unlike the latter, does not need a particularly strong bite because it kills its smaller prey are swallowed immediately and larger ones tearing pieces of flesh and then wait for them to die bled ( tactic called "hit and run") where these animals to kill their prey must exert great force to suppress them.
The white shark's mouth is equipped with several rows of teeth: triangular and serrated upper arch shredding prey, long and pointed on the bottom to stab and hold the prey. The teeth come to measure up to a maximum of 7.5 cm.
The average size ranging between 4 and 6 meters, with a weight (for adults) between 1000 and 1900 kg. You probably can get to over 7 meters in length.

This shark can live from 30 to 40 years. The species is ovoviviparous and does not show the intrauterine cannibalism as assessed within the bull shark.
It is among the deemed dangerous sharks to humans, along with the oceanic whitetip, the tiger and the leuca, and is often exaggerated as "the man-eater". Idea began in 1975 with the movie Jaws Steven Spielberg adaptation of Peter Benchley's novel. In fact the white shark is dangerous to humans if they come into contact, but they are often exploratory bites due to the similarity that, seen from below, the shape of a surfer with that of marine mammals. The white shark is not a danger, however, in absolute terms, since the probability of encountering a white shark is extremely rare. During his life, the likelihood of dying from a heart attack is 1 in 5, 1 in 7 for cancer, 1 of 84 road accident, 1 in 13,729 to heat stroke, 1 in 79,746 and 1 in 3,748 for lightning .067 for a shark attack. Because these statistics cover deaths caused by all kinds of shark, the percentage of deaths caused specifically by the white shark is therefore even lower. The man is far more dangerous for the white shark than the white shark it is for humans.
