The sandbar shark (Carcharhinus plumbeus Nardo, 1827) is a species of the family Carcharhinidae. It is one of the largest coastal species, very close to the Carcharhinus obscurus, Carcharhinus altimus and the Carcharhinus leucas. The first dorsal fin is triangular in shape and relatively large compared to the body, since it constitutes 18% of the mass of the latter. Typically the body is massive and rounded snout and shorter than that of other sharks. The upper teeth have irregular cusps rather pointed. The second dorsal and anal fins are more or less the same height. Females can grow to 2.2-2.5 meters, males up to 1.8. the color can vary from bluish gray burnished bronze until, with the clear or white belly. They swim alone or in a variable number of schools broken down by sex. They are mainly active at night, especially at sunrise and sunset. It is often found in waters inshore and shallow, sandy or muddy, such as bays, estuaries, harbors and river mouths. however, it can swim to depths of 200 meters or more, as in the intertidal zone. Inhabits temperate and tropical waters around the world: in the Western Atlantic from Massachusetts to Brazil. The young are numerous at Chesapeake Bay, which is probably one of the most important nurseries for species in the East Coast of the USA. They feed on fish, rays and crabs. They may become prey of the tiger shark and more rarely also the great white shark. The species is viviparous. The female is played every two years and gives birth to 8 to 10 sharks after a gestation period of about a year.
