Phyllids (Phylliidae, Brunner, 1893) are a family of insects of the order of phasmids (Phasmida). The members of this family are commonly called leaf insects due to their appearance similar to that of a leaf, which is one of the most notable examples of mimicry in the animal kingdom. Such features allow them to camouflage themselves so accurately that it is often impossible for predators to distinguish them from real leaves; some species of leaf insects have even developed marks on the sides of their bodies that resemble bites, holes or plant diseases. They are generally green in color and have a flattened abdomen.
The dimensions vary from species to species, while the most obvious sign of sexual dimorphism are the wings: the females are usually apterous and equipped with large elytra, while the males have small elytra and are winged.
These insects are generally phytophagous: the main sources of plant food for this species are oak and bramble leaves. In the absence of males, a female can also generate eggs by parthenogenesis, also vegetable-like, similar to small seeds. The nymphs are generally wingless and brown or reddish in color: after the eggs hatch, they climb trees where they begin to feed on leaves, turning green over time. The nymphs of some species, as a further imitative method, rock back and forth imitating the leaves shaken by the wind. Leaf insects are widespread in Southeast Asia, in some islands in the Pacific Ocean and in Australia; they generally inhabit dense areas of vegetation.
Pulchriphyllium giganteum is the largest species, reaching a size of 105 mm.
