Strombus (Carl Linnaeus, 1758) is a genus of medium-large marine gastropod molluscs from the Strombidae family, which includes true shells and their immediate relatives. About 50 living species have been recognized, ranging in size from rather small to very large. In the geological past there existed a much larger number of species of thrombi. Fossils of species belonging to this genus have been found all over the world in sediments from the Cretaceous to the Quaternary (age group: 140.2 million years ago until recently).
Of the living species, most are found in the Indian and Pacific oceans.
