The Eremotherium, Megatheriidae family, is a genus of extinct mammalian terrestrial giant sloth, superorder of Xenarthra, that includes also ant-eaters and armadillos. The specie E. laurillardi had a wide distribution that covering both the South that the North America.
Their evolution took place from mid to late Tertiary in South America, when the continent was isolated. The next step took place during the Miocene by a dispersion of some variety in North America and other mid-size between the small islands of the Antilles, along with the short-distance swimming or using the land bridge now submerged. Remains of sloths were found in remote areas like Alaska or Patagonia. Thr Megatheriidae appeared later in the Oligocene, about 30 million years ago, also in South America. The group includes the giant Megatherium ( 'big beast'), Eremotherium and other megatheridae size smaller.
The skeletal structure of these sloths, the thickness of the bones and joints, combined with their size and terrible claws, delivered to these powerful animals a formidable defense against predators.
Eremotherium eomigrans, with more than five tons in weight, 6 meters in length, was capable of standing height of 17 feet (5.2 m).
Of these animals were found also coprolites and fragments of skin with hair.
