fossil tooth of a prehistoric lagomorphs, mm 13 x 4 x 2.
Palaeolagus was a primitive lagomorphs lived during the EarlyOligocene in North America. It is therefore related to the current hares.
This little animal, along with a maximum of thirty inches, is one of the oldest lagomorphs known. Although the appearance was probably quite similar to that of a rabbit, it possessed antiquated characteristics in its legs, which were not elongated as those of the current forms. Probably, therefore, Palaeolagus not proceeded leaping but lived in burrows dug in the ground, like many current lagomorphs. Ears, it is assumed, were probably already quite stretched, and the type of gear was developed.
