The Rugops (whose name means "wrinkle face") was a carnivorous dinosaur belonging to abelisaurs, a group of theropod dinosaurs typical of the southern continents, which have developed independently tetanura distributed mainly in Laurasia. He lived at the beginning of the Upper Cretaceous (Cenomanian, about 95 million years ago) and its fossil remains have been found in Niger. It is one of the oldest known Abelisauridae. The discovery of a skull Rugops in Niger in 2000 was a crucial turning point in understanding the evolution of theropods in that area, and shows that this mass of earth at that time was still united with Gondwana. Although only known from a skull and lower fossil remains, Rugops was estimated to be about 20 feet by comparison with its relatives (Aucasaurus and Carnotaurus). Rugops was equipped, like other abelisaurs, a short and high skull, crossed by two rows of low protuberances running longitudinally from the nostrils to the eye area. According to Paul Sereno, who described the animal in 2004, these rough bumps held up, on the animal life, some kind of crest (perhaps similar to those present in Dilophosaurus). The roughness on the skull, probably hosted numerous blood vessels, and it is possible that these parts of the head were covered with brightly colored tissue. The presence of ridges and delicate blood vessels, however, led to the hypothesis that these structures would be unsuitable to be used constantly in the hunt, and it is likely that this animal is quite often fed on carrion. The only known species, Rugops primus, is thought to be related to gender Majungasaurus, found in Madagascar.
