Description

real biped carnivorous dinosaur tooth, cm 2.7.

Albertosaurus was a theropod of the family of Tyrannosauridae. It was so named in honor of the Canadian region, where were found the first remains of the original. It was a dinosaur biped smaller other Tyrannosauridae on average about 9 meters long and 3 in height and a weight of 1.7 tonnes, but some Albertosaurus could get to 10 meters in length. Albertosaurus shared common characteristics with other specimens of the family of Tyrannosauridae: biped, carnivorous, balanced the heavy head and powerful body with a long tail and had only two fingers for each upper limb.
The skull, which in adult reached meters in length, was fitted with 60 eterodont sharpened teeth (more than other Tyrannosauridae). Above both eyes had a short crest bone, probably used in courtship rituals to attract the females. The rear limbs were long and ended with a foot with four fingers, the toe was very short. Albertosaurus could reach speeds of 40-50 km / h.
In 1913 it was discovered a carnosaurus that was called Gorgosaurus libratus, but Russell said that the term Gorgosaurus was just a synonym for Albertosaurus (like the Brontosaurus is Apatosaurus) and Gorgosaurus libratus was renamed Albertosaurus libratus.
In 2003, Phil Currie compared several skulls of Tyrannosauridae and came to the conclusion that Albertosaurus and Gorgosaurus could be considered as two separate species. In the meantime, have been found many remains of Albertosaurus and then everything is again under discussion.
