The Hesperocyon is an extinct carnivorous mammal belonging to the family of Canidae. It lived in Late Eocene since to Oligocene (39 - 24 million years ago). His remains were found only in North America. About 80 centimeters long, this dog had a significantly primitive aspect: the body was low and long, feet were slender and short, and the skull was long and thin. The tail, however, was very long and flexible. In general, the shape of the body reminded more than a civet than to a real dog. The characteristics of the cranial bones and teeth, however, the show as a primitive member of the family of Canide. Given the kind of little teeth specialized for a carnivorous diet, it is likely that this animal was an omnivore, unlike subsequent Borophaginae.
The Hesperocyon, was considered one of the oldest known dogs, and the most prominent representative of the subfamily of Hesperocyoninae. This group became extinct about 15 million years ago, after surviving all the Oligocene and Miocene. Forms basal Hesperocyon which arise numerous genres, including Ectopocynus, Osbornodon, Cynodesmus, Enhydrocyon and Mesocyon, which differ according to different specializations.
